Tracking goals: why you should track goals and methods of tracking

Keeping track of your progress when attempting to achieve your goals is a vitally important step in the overall outcome; when you keep track of your goals you give yourself motivation. By seeing all the progress that you have made on a daily or even weekly basis, you begin to see the end result come into view. For instance if your goal is to lose 50 pounds, then keeping track of your goal while losing weight will show you how much progress you are making. For each 5 pounds that you lose you feel more motivated to continue simply because you can see for yourself that you are nearing your goal.

With that in mind there are several methods for tracking your goals that can be very helpful. One such method is the use of charts. As in the weight loss example above, you can make a chart either on paper or with your word processor that allows you to input information along the way. You will need to select a date for reaching your goal. Be realistic with your date selection. For instance, it is simply not feasible to lose 50 pounds in a week, so ensure that you are choosing a date that gives you ample time to actually reach your goal.

Once you have your date, begin to save any information or data during the process. By keeping track of your progress you are allowing yourself an opportunity to correct any possible mistakes. You can also use a calendar to chart your progress; marking progress on a daily or weekly basis, depending on your goal. Be sure to mark the date that you have selected to achieve your goal on the calendar.

Journals are also a wonderful way to keep track of your goal. Report daily in your journal any progress that you have made. You may also be interested in finding an online goal tracker. There are many available that will let you input your information regarding your progress and you can save the progress to your computer.

However you track your progress, know that keeping track of your goals is an excellent way to ensure that you meet them. Having a daily or weekly reminder of the goal that you have set and being focused enough to report your progress regularly will help to ensure that you achieve your goal. Once you have achieved the first goal, keeping track of other goals is much simpler.
